Cayman Scholar Embarks on Quantity Surveying Degree After Successful Internship with Bould Consulting Ltd.

Caymanian student Stephen Eden is set to begin an exciting new chapter this September as he starts his Quantity Surveying degree at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, supported by a Cayman Islands Government Scholarship. His journey follows a successful summer internship with Bould Consulting Ltd (BCL), where he will also continue to contribute part-time while completing his studies abroad.

Stephen’s decision to pursue Quantity Surveying was inspired by the dynamic nature of the profession. “No two days are the same,” he explained. “The role allows me to combine two of my strongest interests—mathematics and negotiation—while being involved throughout the entire lifecycle of a project, from initial planning to final delivery.”

During his time at BCL, Stephen gained hands-on experience that helped solidify his career aspirations. “My internship at Bould Consulting has been incredibly valuable. I’ve developed stronger communication skills, sharpened my attention to detail, and gained confidence in reading and interpreting drawings.

Thanks to the mentorship and guidance of Martyn Bould MBE FRICS and Patrick Stainton MRICS, I’m more motivated than ever to push myself and grow within this profession. I’m also grateful to Julliet Imbwaga MRICS for her support during my internship.”

One of the highlights of his internship was his involvement in the Eden Centre project. “My role included participating in client and contractor meetings and assisting with measurements, and the hands-on experience left a big impression on me. Seeing the level of detail and collaboration that goes into a project like that truly inspired me.”

Stephen also reflected on challenges he observed within the Cayman Islands’ construction sector, noting that project delays—from material import to permit approvals—remains a significant issue. Looking ahead, he believes his generation can help shape a more sustainable future. “We can make a positive difference by prioritizing sustainable design and construction practices that protect our environment.”

As he flies to the United Kingdom, Stephen is eager to continue developing his professional toolkit. “I’m looking forward to sharpening my measurement skills and working toward a CAD certification, building on everything I’ve learned at BCL.”

When asked what advice he would give to others considering the profession, Stephen was clear: “Be ready to learn continuously, stay adaptable, and embrace every opportunity to gain practical experience. It’s a field that rewards persistence and curiosity.”

Patrick Stainton MRICS, Senior Quantity Surveyor at BCL, praised Stephen’s commitment and potential:

“Stephen has shown an impressive level of curiosity, maturity, and professionalism throughout his internship. His willingness to learn and his ability to adapt quickly have been outstanding. We are proud to have supported his early development and look forward to continuing to mentor him as he pursues his degree and future career in Quantity Surveying. His journey is an excellent example of the value Caymanian talent brings to the built environment.”

Martyn Bould MBE FRICS, Chairman of Bould Consulting Ltd, added:

“Bould Consulting Ltd congratulate Stephen on his achievements to date and confirm that we have always been committed to developing Caymanian talent and ensuring that the next generation has the tools and confidence to excel in the construction industry. Stephen’s success shows what is possible when young people are given the right mentorship, opportunities, and responsibilities. We are actively looking for more Caymanian interns to join us, so that we can continue to mentor, guide, and enable them to play their part in shaping the future of their Cayman Islands.”
